The above photos were sent to me by a relative and they are treasures. I think that the top picture is the only on of the Gooch brothers:Charles Newberry born 1847, James Monroe born 1850, David Elnathan born 1852, William R born about 1855, John Robert born 1857, and Hiram born 1863. Missing in this picture are 2 brothers: James Monroe and Hiram (only lived for 5 months)

The picture on the bottom of the family of Charles Newberry was a real surprise.
Back row; Floyd cardwell (married to Bess Gooch), Edith, Gladys, Bess and Rees.
Front row: Mary Upton, Charles Gooch, Annie Gooch Upton (mother of Mary)

These pictures were important to some family many years ago and I would like to give pictures back to them.  Some of the pictures are 80-100 years old.  Please contact me with any questions or comments at ash689@aol.com

Please take a look at the photos posted on this website. Most are from Gallia county, Ohio where my Gooch families lived. It would be wonderful if some one could recognize any one at all here. If so, please, please contact me. Thanks, Karen

To walk on the land where my grandmother grew up

For a long time I have wanted to go back to southern Ohio and walk on the land where my grandmother lived.  To see the trees that were old even when she was young.  Are the wild flowers related to the ones she might have picked in 1900?  What will it feel like to walk up and down the gentle hills on the old family farm that is no longer producing crops?  There are some ancient out-buildings barely standing, yet hiding some old jars in the cobwebby corners.  Did she play hide-and-seek with her sisters?  or run after her borther's old hound dog?

Find A Grave

This is a good website where you can look for information about locating an ancestor's grave.  There are more than 53 million graves, often with pictures and headstone incriptions.  You can search by name, by location, or by cemetery.  Really good information here.

Genealogy Search Help

Genealogy Search Help for Google, which helps you run targeted genealogical Google searches
Free Genealogy Search Help for Google
Get the Best Genealogy Searches for Google by Using Your Family Tree
This free genealogy site will help you use Google™ for your research. It will create a series of different searches using tips or "tricks" that will likely improve your results. The different searches will give you many different ways of using Google to find ancestry information on the Internet.
Just complete the small family tree from the above link for an ancestor and this site will set up the best searches for you, based on what you enter. Tip: If you don't know an ancestor's parents, but know one of the ancestor's children, use the child's name for the First Name and Last Name below (and spouse, birth, and death) and then enter the ancestor as the Father or Mother. This gives more information for building a search.

Genealogy new FREE Resource

If you go to the New York Times site, you can enter your search terms in the bar near the top of the page and select whether you want to search articles since 1981 or before 1981. Once you have your results, you can select the Advanced option to limit your search to specific dates. The stories are downloadable as PDF documents. (If you happen across articles that aren't in the free years, they're $4.95 each, or you can get a monthly pass for $7.95 that allows 100 story downloads.)
I used a couple of Ohio place names and found real gold...many surnames, too. Try it.

Story of Col. William D. Gooch and family

Are Your Ancestors in Google Book Search?
A favorite search tool is Google's Book Search, at
books.google.com. By typing in keywords just like in a normal Google search, you get results from all sorts of out-of-print and hard-to-find books. Type in "Gooch Family" and the story of Col. Gooch will appear...a fascinating account. There are many other resources here.
Use it to research the histories of areas that aren't well-represented online.
Some books show up in the results as full page scans with searchable text. Other books are restricted to just showing a few preview pages or a few paragraphs of excerpts. Some are downloadable as PDF documents. (Even if you can't see all of the information, Google gives you the publisher's information that gives you a head start on finding it at your library.)

Family ancestors

He who cares nothing about his ancestors will rarely achieve anything worthy of being remembered by his descendants. —author unknown

James Gooch, father to James Robert

Sir William Gooch, born London 1681, served as lieutenant governor of Virginia 1727-1749.

James Gooch, the younger brother of William, did not believe in slavery, though his father was a large slave holder and land owner in Goochland County, VA. On his 21st birthday James asked for his parrimony and was given 100 slaves. He freed his slaves and with his bride, Elizabeth Poindexter, traveled west to Gallipolis, Ohio. He built his log cabin in the present Rio Grande community and reared eight children. He farmed and raised horses which he took to Richmond, Virginia to sell. On his last trip, shortly before the Civil War, he and son, James Robert, found feelings so high around Richmond, they lost their horses but returned home safely.
