Get the Best Genealogy Searches for Google by Using Your Family Tree
This free genealogy site will help you use Google™ for your research. It will create a series of different searches using tips or "tricks" that will likely improve your results. The different searches will give you many different ways of using Google to find ancestry information on the Internet.
Just complete the small family tree from the above link for an ancestor and this site will set up the best searches for you, based on what you enter. Tip: If you don't know an ancestor's parents, but know one of the ancestor's children, use the child's name for the First Name and Last Name below (and spouse, birth, and death) and then enter the ancestor as the Father or Mother. This gives more information for building a search.

If you go to the New York Times site, you can enter your search terms in the bar near the top of the page and select whether you want to search articles since 1981 or before 1981. Once you have your results, you can select the Advanced option to limit your search to specific dates. The stories are downloadable as PDF documents. (If you happen across articles that aren't in the free years, they're $4.95 each, or you can get a monthly pass for $7.95 that allows 100 story downloads.)
I used a couple of Ohio place names and found real gold...many surnames, too. Try it.

Are Your Ancestors in Google Book Search?
A favorite search tool is Google's Book Search, at books.google.com. By typing in keywords just like in a normal Google search, you get results from all sorts of out-of-print and hard-to-find books. Type in "Gooch Family" and the story of Col. Gooch will appear...a fascinating account. There are many other resources here.
Use it to research the histories of areas that aren't well-represented online. Some books show up in the results as full page scans with searchable text. Other books are restricted to just showing a few preview pages or a few paragraphs of excerpts. Some are downloadable as PDF documents. (Even if you can't see all of the information, Google gives you the publisher's information that gives you a head start on finding it at your library.)

James Gooch, father to James Robert

Sir William Gooch, born London 1681, served as lieutenant governor of Virginia 1727-1749.

James Gooch, the younger brother of William, did not believe in slavery, though his father was a large slave holder and land owner in Goochland County, VA. On his 21st birthday James asked for his parrimony and was given 100 slaves. He freed his slaves and with his bride, Elizabeth Poindexter, traveled west to Gallipolis, Ohio. He built his log cabin in the present Rio Grande community and reared eight children. He farmed and raised horses which he took to Richmond, Virginia to sell. On his last trip, shortly before the Civil War, he and son, James Robert, found feelings so high around Richmond, they lost their horses but returned home safely.

James Robert Gooch's Will:
I James Robert Gooch of Raccoon Township in the County of Gallia and State of Ohio Being of Sound Mind and MemoryDo make and publish this my last will and testamentAnd as to my Worldly estate and all the property real personal or mixed of which I shall die___zed and possessed or to which I shall be entitled at the time of my decease, I devise bequeath and dispose through in the following manner to wit:
I give devise and bequeath first all my Personal property after my just debts and funeral expenses have been paid to my beloved wife Mary Jane, during her life and then to be divided equally to my legal heirs.
I give devise and bequeath unto my Son John R. Gooch all my real estate consisting of fifty acres the same being the farm on which I now reside. It is my will that my wife have her support from said farm and that my son John R. Gooch is to furnish her such support, and further that he pay within four years from the time he shall come in to possession of said farm. Pay to my son Charles Gooch one hundred dollars. And to my son James Gooch one hundred dollars and to my son Elnathan Gooch one hundred dollars and to my son W R Gooch one hundred dollars and to my daughter Sarah Wimple one hundred dollars. And lastly I do nominate and appoint my wife Mary Jane and my son Charles Gooch Executors of this my last will and testament.
In witness whereof I the said James Robert Gooch have to this my last will and testament Subscribed my name and affixed my seal this 5th day of September AD 1888. Signed and Acknowledged
